THE DANCE BETWEEN CHAOS AND ORDER -1

CHAPTER 1, CREATION

by

Harvey Thorstad

In the beginning
there was no space,
no time.
There was no energy,
no matter.
There was no law of gravity,
no order.
There was no light
because there was no energy.

All was ethereal.
All was chaos.
Everything was mind stuff.
Stuff unbound by space and time
because there was no space and time.

Out of this quagmire of chaos
intelligence was becoming aware of itself.
It began to reason.
After eons or seconds
or whatever
as there was no time,
intelligence concluded;
“I am aware,
therefore I am”.
“I am a reasoning being.”
With this momentous conclusion,
intelligence found
that manipulation of this chaos,
this ethereal stuff,
this mind stuff,
this stuff that was itself
became possible.

The first law of order
to be created
was sequence.
With sequence came the concept of time,
and it was so.
Time existed.

Other laws of order followed.
The laws of matter and energy were created.
The law of gravity
came into being
just by thinking of it.
There followed light
and the heavenly bodies.
The universe was created.

Intelligence became enamored
with the order created.
Life was created.
From this evolved
Over millions of years
Plants and animals
And the creatures known as human beings.
They added to the splendor of order.
It was beautiful.
It was amazing.
Out of chaos
came order governed by law.

This law and order was not absolute.
For if it were absolute,
then cause and effect
would determine all that was to be.
This would leave no room
for free will,
responsibility
or even intelligence
that created it all in the beginning.
Thus, the law and order of the universe
is not absolute.
Law and order is continually being modified
by what we may call free will,
psychic force,
intelligence,
or reasoning chaos.

This balance.
is a yin/yang type of balance.
Neither order nor free will.
can exist by itself.

Occasionally psychic force
or free will
is studied
attempting to discover
it’s illusive nature.
It manifests itself as telepathy,
clairvoyance,
telekinesis,
precognition
and similar ways.
Note that its manifestation
infringes on the laws of order.
Precognition infringes on sequence called time.
Telekinesis infringes on the law of gravity.
Clairvoyance infringes upon time
and the physical transmission of data faster than the speed of light.
Telepathy similarly infringes
on the physical transmission of data
other than by means covered by the laws of order.

In a number of ways psychic force
can be compared to quantum mechanics.
It defies efforts
to harness and predict it by using the laws of cause and effect.
Quantum mechanics predicts
through sequence called time only as a probability.
It’s illusive
as psychic force is illusive.
Psychic force is necessarily illusive,
for if it’s totally captured by order
then free will,
responsibility
and intelligence
become non-existent.

The Yoga folk found out
that they are God.
So is everyone else.
So are the birds that fly,
And the animals that run
And the fish that swim.
And so are
the clouds in the sky,
the rocks in the earth
and the stars in the heavens.

Order and chaos vie for power
over eons of time measured in thousands of years.
The peak of order
is sometimes called the scientific age,
the age of reason.
The peak of chaos
is sometimes called the mystic age,
the age of magic.
Order promotes
cause and effect
as its source of power.
Chaos promotes
belief, faith, ethics and responsibility.

Order recently peaked
and now we swing toward chaos.
The Age of Aquarius
is coming into its time.
Achieving what one believes
is becoming more possible.
Magic is taking on meaning
beyond the unknowable of cause and effect.
It’s a wonderful time
To be alive.

THE DANCE BETWEEN CHAOS AND ORDER -2

CHAPTER 2, DESTINY

by

Harvey Thorstad

“I think we were destined to meet”
Says my Love romantically in bed.
“Destiny, karma and fate
Actually play a minor role
In the greater scheme of things”
Say I.
“What do you mean?”
Says she.
“It’s rather heavy stuff
And perhaps best left for another time.”
Say I.
“You offer me ice cream and then take it away.
That’s not very nice.”
Says she snuggling closer.
“Ok, but, you’re disrupting my concentration.
If you want your ice cream, you’ll have to ease up a bit.”
Say I.
“Hmm!”
Says she.
So begins the tale of destiny.

“Predestination can also be lumped
Along with destiny, karma and fate.
They are reflected in our culture by such things as
‘Kay Sa Ra Kay Sa Ra,
Whatever will be will be.’
These concepts presume a plan being carried out in time.
A plan implies a planner.
Who is the planner?
Is it a God or Gods in some form?
Is it simply the rules of cause and effect?
In either case, order would have to be near absolute
For the plan to come to fruition.
This would leave no room for free will,
The ability of the individual to choose.
Individuals would have no more choice than a grain of sand
In an avalanche.
Since this contradicts the ‘I think therefore I am’ premise,
Destiny and related concepts must yield to free will.
Chaos must be allowed its role.
Thus, in a nutshell, destiny and related play
A minor role
In the greater scheme of things.
What do you think?”
“I think we just wrote another chapter in your book.”
Says she.
“So much for the heavy stuff.
Now let’s enjoy some lighter stuff
In the wonderful spectrum of living.”
Say I, snuggling up close.

THE DANCE BETWEEN CHAOS AND ORDER -3

CHAPTER 3, THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF RELIGION

by

Harvey Thorstad

Positive thinking improves health,
And cures disease.
Negative thinking promotes illness,
In one’s weakest area.
Laying on of hands can heal.
Loss of the “will to live” can kill.

What force is at work here?
How is it focused?
How is it controlled?
What does it do?

If laying on of hands by one can heal,
What can be done by two in unison?
By three?
By ten?
By a multitude?
By a congregation?
By a religion?

One method of focusing this force
Is called prayer.
Another is concurrent reinforcement of beliefs
At a church service.
Or at a specified time.
Or through meditation.

Note that this reinforcement of beliefs
Actually creates and strengthens
The belief.
It actually creates and maintains the god
Or gods.
The more effective the focusing of beliefs
Of the followers,
The stronger the god
Or gods.
The god or gods are this force
Shaped by its believers and followers.

Under this view, Zeus and the gods of ancient Greece
Did and do exist
So long as even one person believes in them.
The same is true for Jehovah,
The “Great Spirit” of American Indian tribes,
As well as the Norse and Roman Gods.

The scientific method allows for no deific power source.
However,
This, itself,
Is a belief in denial.
It, like other religions,
Gains its strength from the belief
Of its followers.

Calling upon aid from one’s gods is common
In preparation
For battle
Or athletic competition.
A practice
That has been present
Throughout recorded history.
Is this just useless rhetoric,
Or does it serve as a focus
Of psychic energy?
Of focusing spiritual force
For good,
Or ill?

Under this view,
The “Will of the Gods”
Is the belief and will
Of its believers and followers.

What makes one religion grow?
Another decline?
One strong?
Another weak?
Is uniting in prayer
Five times a day
More effective than
Once a week?

As in “Star Wars,”
“Let the Force be with You.”
Can have real psychic meaning
If one believes.

Can viewing the building blocks of religion
In this manner
Help build a better world?
“Yes”
Say I.
Current religions in general no longer
Serve the better interests of society.
It’s time for a world view of our spiritual nature
To grow and replace the antiquated religions of today.
The “Age of Aquarius” is here.
Similar to the typewriter being replaced by the computer,
The new order will be a long road.
Old ways cling very effectively.

THE DANCE BETWEEN CHAOS AND ORDER -4

CHAPTER 4, THE SELF-IMAGE

by

Harvey Thorstad

A stress doctor discovers
a shore of the Ocean of Chaos.
He marvels at the power and freedom there
as he learns
to form some of the ocean waves to perform good.
He learns variations
of suggestion, hypnosis, and exercises for relaxation.
He learns to relieve stress in self and others.
Then he observes that some of his clients become sick.
He’s puzzled
and assumes
it’s because he aided them in relieving stress too quickly.
He doesn’t yet realize
he has discovered
what many healers before him have discovered,
that he has merely removed a symptom,
but not changed the self-image.

Healers of many fields have frequently been puzzled
by healing one illness
only to have it replaced by another.
This is true whether healing by
the laying on of hands, suggestion, meditation, pills, or hypnosis.
If the related self-image,
which says the person is stressed, unhealthy, or ill
is not changed,
the power of internal suggestion
will find another way to fulfill the self-image.
The person with headaches will develop back pain.
The stressed person will develop sore joints.
The power and ingenuity of internal suggestion,
which fosters a self-image,
is endless.
To be truly healed,
a person must change his self-image,
either by himself
or with assistance.

THE DANCE BETWEEN CHAOS AND ORDER -5

CHAPTER 5, DEMONS

by

Harvey Thorstad

The exorcist discovers
a shore of the Ocean of Chaos.
He learns skills
at removing demons
from a person possessed.
He learns rituals of battle
quite dramatic.
He also preaches his beliefs in God
and the Devil.
He doesn’t realize
the suggestions of his preaching
create the very demons
that possess a person,
and thus is he able to reinforce his belief
and that of others.
He doesn’t realize
that demons and gods exist
only as long as believers
give them substance.

A rumor takes on a life of it’s own,
and it’s hard to dispel.
A myth takes on a life of it’s own,
and it, too, is difficult to dispel.
The exorcist doesn’t realize that
he gives the Devil credence, substance, and power
by acknowledging Him
in the process of driving Him out.
Once created,
a rumor, myth, god, or devil
becomes entrenched, obstinate, and tough to dispel.

THE DANCE BETWEEN CHAOS AND ORDER -6

CHAPTER 6, PHILOSOPHY IS LIKE A BOOK

by

Harvey Thorstad

For ages and ages
the wise and not so wise
have pondered and wondered
about the basic nature of the world they perceive.
Materialists, mentalists, psychophysical parallelists, and psychophysical
interactionists see an open book
very differently.

The materialists open the book
and see everything written
as if caste in stone by the rules of cause an effect.
There is no
free will, chaos, or anything unbound by the laws of causality.
Free will, ethics, morality, responsibility, and related concepts have no meaning.

The mentalists open the book
and see blank pages to be written by them,
for nothing is caste in stone.
The material world is but a creation
of the mental force.
Free will, ethics, morality, responsibility, and related concepts reign supreme.

Those of the psychophysical parallelism persuasion
open the book
and see a chapter written and caste immutably in stone,
but they also see a second chapter of blank pages to be written by them.
Only in the second chapter do free will, ethics, morality, and related concepts have meaning.

Those of the psychophysical interactionalism persuasion
open the book and see a rough draft to be edited,
or an outline of a book to be written.
The physical world of the materialists governed by the rules of causality exists,
but can be molded, formed, rewritten, and negated by the mental force of chaos.
Free will, ethics, morality, responsibility, and related concepts have real power,
but are limited by the physical rules of causality.

This interaction
between the physical powers of order
and the mental powers of chaos
create the dance of order and chaos
about which this story is written.

THE DANCE BETWEEN CHAOS AND ORDER -7

CHAPTER 7, Cosmic CONSCIOUSNESS

by

Harvey Thorstad

‘Twas Einstein who said it:
Higher than religions of fear,
higher than religions of morality
is a cosmic religious feeling (“cosmic consciousness”)
attained by very few.

Religions of fear
arise out of a need to placate basic fears,
such as hunger, sickness, wild animals, and death.
Religions of fear
generally establish a priestly caste
to stabilize the traditions
and mediate with a deity or deities.
Secular leaders,
if separate from the spiritual leaders,
generally make common cause with the priesthood.

The religions of morality
arise out of a desire
to satisfy moral and social needs—
love, respect, recognition, and so on.
The moral God
protects, loves, rewards, punishes, and is parental in nature,
always looking out after his flock.

Cosmic consciousness
is exceedingly difficult to communicate.
Many religious leaders, artists, philosophers, scientists, and everyday people
have attempted to describe it.
It has no persona one might call God,
no church associated with it.
It is a nirvanic feeling of peace within the universe,
of being one with the universe.

Attainment of cosmic consciousness
is both difficult and easy.
In general,
one has to free oneself of the necessities of everyday living,
the cares and concerns of the moment.
Many forms of meditation have cosmic consciousness
as the ultimate goal.
Even so, most meditators,
while attaining a tranquil, peaceful level,
are unable
to sufficiently free themselves
of the bonds of their culture
to attain a cosmic consciousness.

Some American Indians
have a ritualistic rite of passage into manhood
that attempts attainment of this cosmic sense.
In general,
a male in late adolescence
will go alone into the wilderness
to a specific location
and commune
with the Nature spirits
until an instructive vision is reached.
This generally takes days.

The scientist,
to achieve cosmic consciousness,
must rise above the hypothesis of causality
and accept free will,
ethical responsibility
and the values
that make life worth living.

Be that as it may,
it is at the level of cosmic consciousness
that spirituality, artistry, scientific work, and everyday living
can find common purpose
and work together for the betterment of the world.

THE DANCE BETWEEN CHAOS AND ORDER -8

CHAPTER 8, IMAGINATION

by

Harvey Thorstad

Imagination works best
when set free.
The following visualization
may allow you to approach
cosmic consciousness.

As a basic exercise
close your eyes and visualize
a green plum.
Let it ripen to red
and then blue.
Repeat this visualization a few times,
and then repeat it again
with your eyes open.

Imagine yourself walking
down a path.
Let yourself notice the detail,
what there is to see,
to hear,
to feel,
to smell,
and to taste.
Walking down the path
noticing great detail
with all your senses,
reveling in the experience.
You notice a fork in the trail,
you choose one branch
and continue walking.
Off to the side
you notice a small lake in a meadow
with flowers and trees.
You allow yourself to sit
comfortably against a large oak tree.

You notice a deer.
You know all things are connected
and allow the connection to the deer to increase.
You see what the deer sees,
hear what the deer hears,
feel what the deer feels,
smell the flowers,
and taste the lush grass.
You become aware
of a nearby squirrel
eating an acorn.
You become one with the squirrel.
You see what the squirrel sees,
hear what the squirrel hears,
feel what the squirrel feels,
smell what the squirrel smells,
and taste what the squirrel tastes.

You let your mind expand
and become one
with the birds twittering in the trees
and soaring overhead.

You allow your mind to expand further
and become one with the trees,
the grass,
the butterflies,
the dragonflies,
the fish in the lake,
the lake itself,
and the soil nourishing the plant life.

You feel a thrilling, exhilarating rush
as your mind expands
to include all life on the Earth,
the Earth itself,
the stars
and the universe.
It’s ecstasy.
Your understanding
of being one with the universe is boundless.
You savor the experience
and let it expand your sense of knowledge.

Slowly,
you allow your senses to retract
into the self which is you.
You flex your arms and legs
as you reacquire your sense of individuality,
that unique part of the universe, which is yourself.
You marvel at the insight gained
by allowing yourself
to become one with the universe.

THE DANCE BETWEEN CHAOS AND ORDER -9

CHAPTER 9, PHILOSOPHY, PSYCHOLOGY, ADVERTISING, POLITICS, AND SELF ACTUALIZATION

by

Harvey Thorstad

Few people realize
The philosophical basis for their beliefs.
Psychologists of the behavioral modification school
Are generally unaware of the materialistic philosophy that
Underlies their view of human and animal behavior.
Pavlov, Skinner and many others study reward, punishment and similar means
To modify behavior.
They have learned to modify human and animal behavior very effectively.
People in the advertising field have capitalized and expanded
On these procedures to sell products and services and
To manipulate the populous.
Many politicians, too,
Have learned to manipulate the public using these tools
To get elected and
To promote their views and policies.
Note these views have a very materialistic, deterministic basis
And tend to use reward, punishment, fear and similar manipulative means
To control.
Frequently the goal of this control is greed or power.
Where are ethics, respect, morality, responsibility, compassion, love and joy?

Now contrast the above materialistic picture
With a mentalistic or psychophysical interactionist philosophical base,
Where the forces of chaos play a larger role.
Ethics, respect, morality, responsibility, compassion, love and joy abound.
To refresh understanding of the role of chaos and the various philosophical views,
Rereading chapters one and six is recommended.
Humanistic psychologists have promoted a very different view of human and animal behavior.
Perhaps partial understanding can be made
By looking at Abraham Maslow’s
“Hierarchy of Needs.”

Abraham Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs

These needs drive human behavior.
Before safety needs become functional,
Physiological needs must be at least partially satisfied,
And so on for love/belonging and higher level needs.
For example, a person dying of thirst on a desert
Will not be motivated by friendship
Until his thirst has been at least partially satisfied.

Note that wealth, greed and power are important only,
In so far as they contribute to these core needs.
By educating the people as to what is possible
At Love/Belonging,
At Esteem,
And at Self-Actualization levels;
One can lead
Toward a far more joyous world.

Instead of largely ignoring our large homeless population,
We should strive to at least partially satisfy their physiological and safety needs.
This would allow them to function at the love/belonging and higher levels.

Instead of allowing our nation to bully other nations
And drive them toward the level of safety and physiological needs,
We should allow and encourage rising to the enjoyment of living at higher levels.

Imagine a world population where the vast majority
Have their basic needs largely satisfied.
Imagine a world where most are enjoying
Creativity,
Spontaneity,
Problem solving behavior,
Lack of prejudice,
Acceptance of facts,
And other pleasures of self actualization.

Imagine a world where individuals and businesses
Truly represent and advertise their goods and services.

Imagine a world at peace
With nations intermingling with one another showing
Respect, compassion, friendship, and good will.

Hopefully, such a goal can be reached.
How to reach such a goal is a subject that has occupied much of my time.

I once read,
“What man can conceive, Man can achieve.”
May it be so.

THE DANCE BETWEEN CHAOS AND ORDER -10

CHAPTER 10, THE SIXTH SENSE, QUANTUM MIND AND QUANTUM ENTANGLEMENT

by

Harvey Thorstad

All things are connected.
We are connected
To each other
To the birds that fly
To the deer that run
To the bees that pollinate
To the fish that swim
To the trees that shade
To the earth that nourishes
To the sun that lights
To the stars that shine
To the universe that awes.

How are we connected?
Primarily, we are connected by our five senses.
We see
We hear
We smell
We taste
We touch.
But,
What about the mother that senses when her son dies?
What about the documented cases of mothers,
Fathers, spouses, lovers, friends and others who
Sense the death of ones near them when they die from
A great catastrophe such as
The sinking of the Titanic
And great coal mine catastrophes?

I remember working at a small fish market
During my mid teens.
I was puzzled by the flow of customers
That seemed to come in random clusters.
Hours would go by with no customers,
Then a flurry of customers
Followed by another quiet period.
I attempted to match the busy periods
With rush hour
With time of day
With events in the area.
All attempts to find a pattern failed.
The nearest I could come to a reasonable explanation was
When one car stopped
Others noticed and remembered that
They also wanted to stop at the fish market.
This explanation wasn’t satisfying to me, but,
I could come up with none better at the time.
This clustering behavior continued to puzzle me over the years.
Coincidence did not seem to explain the observed experiences.

The literature is filled with psychic experiences.
Are these all to be explained as coincidence,
Hallucination, wishful thinking
Or otherwise untrue?

Over time great thinkers have expanded our understanding
Of the universe.
Copernicus showed that the earth revolved around the sun.
Newton gave us laws of physics.
Einstein gave us the theory of relativity.
Max Plank gave us quantum physics.
Now many are looking beyond the forgoing to what might be called
The quantum mind.
Numerous quantum mind theories are being proposed by noted professionals
Such as
David Bohm, Gustav Bernroider, David chalmers, Roger Penrose,
Evan Walker and Henry Stapp.
It greatly pleased me to note people seriously studying
Quantum Mind.

Quantum Entanglement

“is a property of a quantum mechanical state of a system of two or more objects in which the states of the constituting objects
are linked together so that one object can no longer be adequately described without full mention of its counterpart-even if the
individual objects are spatially separated .”
Quantum Entanglement
Spatial separation is irrelevant.
That is, communication between entangled objects is instantaneous.
This exceeds Einstein’s speed of light limit.
Pulling the five senses, quantum mind, quantum entanglement and
Free will together
Leads to a sixth sense.
The sixth sense is another way we are connected
With the universe.
The sixth sense allows free will to operate as an original cause unbound
By the cause and effect prison.
It allows telepathy, clairvoyance, telekinesis, precognition and other psychic phenomena.
It allows one to function with greater freedom than
a grain of sand in an avalanche.
It allows ethics, responsibility, joy, morality, intentionality, love, belonging and creativity.

Some of what I’ve written here is speculative.
I greatly desire comments.
I’m very much encouraged to note the current research and writing
By serious respected professionals that go
Way beyond Newton, Einstein and Plank.
